Japan Success Story—ValueCommerce

Speaker: Tim Williams

Founder and Director of ValueCommerce

This is a special joint event with the Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce.

New Zealander Tim Williams is one of the original pioneers of the Japanese Internet and Advertising industries. He founded Transpacific Inc. in 1996. He then co-founded ValueClick Japan in 1998, served as its Vice President, and took it to a successful IPO. Next he returned to Transpacific Inc., renamed the company ValueCommerce Co. Ltd., and has served as both president and CEO.

ValueCommerce is one of Japan’s true foreign entrepreneur success stories. Built from scratch in just 7 years, the company was publicly listed on Mothers (the section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange for high-growth startup companies) on 31 July 2006. What was notable about this IPO, apart from the healthy valuation—despite declining IPO pricings at the time—was that the company was founded and is still run by foreign entrepreneurs. Not only founder Tim Williams, but also CEO Brian Nelson, the COO and CTO, are all foreigners—a good example for foreign entrepreneurs in Japan to look up to.

ValueCommerce is a total e-commerce solutions provider. Its three core areas of business are:
1. Providing revenue-generating solutions for major web sites;
2. e-marketing (advertising & sales) solutions for corporations marketing online, and
3. Systems solutions for the back end of e-commerce sites.

ValueCommerce runs the largest “affiliate marketing” Internet advertising and sales marketplace in Japan, delivering over 600 million ads daily and selling millions of dollars of product each month.
